This is a very popular color variant of the Aulonocara sp. “Stuartgranti Maleri” (Marleri Is.). The Aulonocara Rubescens or Ruby Red Peacock cichlid is not native to the waters of Lake Malawi, neither is it a hybrid like the Aulonocara Firefish.
The Ruby Red peacock has been line breed to get it’s bright red color and was imported into the USA by Peter Rubin. This very popular peacock cichlid features a bright red body with a dazzling metallic blue color covering most of its face. The German Red Peacock is another popular variant of this cichlid which was line bred from the Aulonocara sp. “Stuartgranti Maleri” (Chipoka) which may develop a lighter red color.
